So I'm getting more and more excited about the idea of starting to sell my art.
I went to a little place in Jackson called Artopia today. Its an old railway hotel that was built in 1911 (if I remember correctly) that has been turned into an art gallery and cafe. There are two or three little semi-permanent stores, a tiny little bakery and a cafe/restaurant. the rest of the place is filled with art. The cool thing about the place is that each of the old hotel rooms and all of the wall space can be rented to independant artists who want to display their works. There are different prices for different sizes of wall. You pay per month and sign a lease for 3 or 6 months. The two women that run the place handle all the sales, keep track of your money for you, advertise your work by word of mouth to people that visit Artopia and the other gallery they run downtown caled Margritte's, and you get a check for your sales once a month. All the artist really has to do is hang their own work, put up new stuff when sales are made, pay their rent on time and pick up their check once a month.
I think I really want to to try this. I got really excited about it when I was talking to the lady, Alicia, today. Even if I don't sell a lot of stuff I think that the experience will be worth it. I'm going to look through all of my paintings and photographs and see what I can start with. I'm also getting more excited about producing more work. I've been so busy with the end of the semester and moving and starting to work more in Jackson... but now I'm going to make more time to go to the studio and paint and see about working in the darkroom this summer.
For anyone who hasn't been to Artopia, you should stop in. Its a really neat place. Maybe in a few weeks there might be a few new works on display by a girl from Freed. ;oD
